What is a domain hack?

A domain hack is a domain name that spells a word across the dot: the TLD is not an appendix but the last syllable of the word itself. instagr.am reads "instagram", del.icio.us reads "delicious" — and sta.ck.gg reads "stack.gg".

Done right, a domain hack is shorter than the .com it replaces, more memorable than any hyphenated alternative, and it signals craft: whoever owns one clearly cared about their name.

Why they're rare

A domain hack only works when a word happens to end in an existing TLD — and the remaining prefix is still available to register. Both are lotteries. There are ~1,500 TLDs, but very few of them terminate common words, and the good prefixes on those that do were snapped up years ago. The famous hacks (instagr.am, bit.ly, you.tube) are unrepeatable — the words are taken, permanently.

The *ck trick

English has one spectacular cluster of hackable words: everything ending in -ck. Stack, hack, track, click, pick, kick, block, luck — dozens of short, product-grade words share the same two final letters. With the domain ck.gg, every one of them becomes a hack: sta.ck.gg, ha.ck.gg, tra.ck.gg — the word breaks over the dot and lands on .gg, the TLD where gaming and dev culture already lives.

• Trade-off: technically it's a subdomain with delegated DNS. For users and search engines it reads and works like a domain; the exclusivity is contractual.
